Democrats' Big Day

Iraq, corruption and the economy are the issues that propelled Democrats into victories in New York, the House and Senate. Hillary Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, Andrew Cuomo and Alan Hevesi score big wins, while Democrats claim the House and possibly the Senate. An Associated Press exit poll found that three of four New York voters disapprove of President Bush's job performance and that "overwhelming majorities" of voters who gave Bush poor marks voted for Spitzer and Clinton.

From the Field

"I am the invisible candidate. If you are not an incumbent, you have no chance in New York."

--Khorshed Chowdhury, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for the 54th State Assembly district in Brooklyn.

Give me the car, Dad — and the vote

They call themselves Future Voters of America, and their goal is to lower New York City's Voting Age to 16. "It's the next big civil rights movement!" says Park Slope junior Aimee Stern.

Hevesi win brings little job security

Incumbent state comptroller Alan Hevesi's reelection might not spare him from impeachment.

The New Jersey vote: song of the hyenas

A slime-slinging, name-calling campaign that may change the balance of power in the U.S. Senate has ended - now that Democrat Bob Menendez has been projected as the winner - and most voters are glad it's over.
